Competition Description

Win a Copy of Three Potteries and Three Villages by Local Author Phil Bates!

Phil Bates, a long-standing resident of Grayshott village, has written an engaging and informative book that explores pottery, village life, and his own personal experiences. The title reflects Compton, Kingwood, and Grayshott Potteries, as well as the three villages where he has lived since childhood: Thursley, Milford, and Grayshott.

Bates explains that ‘Community Cohesion’ in the book refers to the ability of different groups and businesses within a community to live harmoniously and work together for positive outcomes. He notes that people are more likely to engage in volunteering, attend local events, and participate in civic activities when they feel a strong sense of belonging—a theme that runs throughout his reflections on village life.

Drawing on over sixty-five years of experience and involvement with Kingswood Pottery and Grayshott Pottery, the book also shares personal details of his life in the three villages, highlighting the common threads that connect them. Readers will gain insight into both the local history and Bates’s own journey within these communities.

The foreword is written by The Rt Hon Sir Jeremy Hunt, who provides additional fascinating details about his grandfather’s connection to the potteries, adding another layer of historical context to the book.
