It started life as a hobby, grew to a single market stall and is now a Great Taste award-winning business selling across four counties: it’s fair to say The Fudge Can is a kitchen-table success story.
Sample the goods, handmade in St Neots, and it’s not hard to see why. Striking that perfect balance between creamy and crumbly, this fudge melts in the mouth and is full of flavour – current top-sellers include Sicilian Lemon, Honey Pistachio and Cinnamon.
Credit goes, explains founder Joanne Canalella, both to quality of ingredients (all natural, they include fresh, finest cream and butter from Bedfordshire’s Blunham Dairy, British sugar and no palm oil, thickeners, sweeteners or other nasties) and a well-honed recipe and method (the dreamy texture is, for example, achieved by painstaking beating of every small batch).
“The unique recipe and method were developed after years of experimentation, failures and lots and lots of burnt saucepans,” adds Joanne, who, on a “mission to bring ‘proper’ crumbly handmade fudge to fellow fudge fans”, started making back in 2013.
Giving bags to friends and family for Christmas that year, the rave reviews inspired her to launch The Fudge Can in 2014, starting with a weekly charity stall in Watford town centre.
